SIJHL MVP Golka, 5 others commit to collegiate programs

DRYDEN – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs of the Superior International Junior Hockey League have announced that six players from this past season’s team, including 2014-15 SIJHL most valuable player Cole Golka, have committed to play collegiate hockey in the fall.

Golka will be off to St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., where he’ll play for the Saints of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

Joining him in committing to schools were forwards Jonathon Philley, Blake Peavey, Ryan Scott and Eric Masters along with defenceman Nick Eychetson.

Peavey and Eychetson will attend Bethel University in Saint Paul, Minn., and skate for the Royals while Philley, Masters and Scott are off to Liberty University (ACHA), Lindenwood-Belleville (ACHA) and Trinity Western University (BCIHL) respectively.

Golka, a 20-year-old forward, became just the second Dryden player in the history of the SIJHL to capture league MVP honours joining former Ice Dogs’ defenceman Jon Mitchell who earned the laurels back in 2010-11.

Golka, who was earlier named a CCM first team all-star at forward, had a tremendous 2014-15 campaign leading all SIJHL skaters in both goals and points with 47 and 89 respectively.

Golka earlier established new Dryden franchise records for goals and points in a single season.

Philley was second in Dryden team scoring last season with 73 points, including 31 goals.

Masters had 13 tallies and 16 assists in 40 outings with the GM Ice Dogs after coming over in mid-October from the English River Miners.

Scott picked up 14 points in 45 outings while Eytchetson had 13 in 38 contests.

Peavey joined Dryden in January and registered 13 points in 22 matches with one of the four markers he scored being a game-winner.
