Miners’ Lenko outlasts Norskies’ Buttazzoni in 1-0 goaltending duel

COCHENOUR, Ont. – Both Micheal Lenko of the English River Miners and Ryan Buttazzoni of the Thief River Norskies turned in a splendid goaltenders’ duel Thursday in a narrow 1-0 triumph by the Miners in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Cochenour Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, Dante Raposo picked up the lone tally of the night 5:41 into the second stanza as he supplied the game-winner by picking up his ninth goal of the season.

Each of the netminders in the contest were stellar with Lenko stopping all 45 shots he faced to post his first SIJHL shutout in the victory.

Buttazzoni only allowed the one to get past him among the 47 attempts fired his way in the setback in the Thief River Falls net.

With the result, English River improved to 27-20-1-3 while the Norkies slipped to 27-17-2-3 to sit one point up on the Miners in the standings, but also holding two games in hand.

The same two teams meet again Friday in a 7:30 p.m. start back at Cochenour Arena.
