Iron Rangers snap lengthy winless drought with victory over Lakers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers got a pair of goals and an assist from Korey Muzzy and 39 stops from goaltender Sean Angle to help them snap a lengthy winless drought as they defeated the Fort Frances Lakers 4-2 Friday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Fort Frances opened the scoring five and a half minutes into the contest on Matt Tustin’s 19th of the season.

Minnesota countered with the equalizer as Muzzy scored on a power play at 15:31.

The Iron Rangers then picked up a buzzer beater just before time expired in the first period Eli Kinsman connecting at 19:59.

Jack Stensgard then notched the eventual game-winner early in the middle stanza.

Maverick Lynes brought the Lakers closer at 7:33 to make it 3-2 after two.

It stayed that way until the late going when Fort Frances pulled starter Jessie Heisz in favour of an extra attacker, but Muzzy iced it with an empty netter with 34 seconds to go to wrap things up.

Kinsman had a pair of assists to go along with his goal as did Stensgard.

The Lakers outshot the Iron Rangers 41-33 on the night with Angle recording the win, making 20 stops alone in the third, with Heisz suffering the loss.

With the decision, Minnesota won for the first time since back on Jan. 3 when they defeated Fort Frances 5-4 in overtime.
