Iron Rangers top Lakers in SIJHL preseason opener

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers got two goals from Kenny Hasbergen and three assists courtesy of Tristin Sabina to defeat the Fort Frances Lakers 3-1 Wednesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League preseason play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Hasbergen got the Iron Rangers on the board 13:30 into the opening session as he notched the lone tally of the first period.

Dalton Johnson made it 2-0 in the second as he found the mark at 7:43 of the frame while Hasbergen added another seven and a half minutes later.

Fort Frances put an end to Kyle Carignan’s shutout bid in the Iron Rangers net as Dylan Robertson connected on the power play with 100 seconds remaining.

Shots on goal on the night favoured Minnesota by a 21-19 count with Carignan picking up the win and Brandon Bodnar suffering the loss.

SIJHL exhibition action continues Thursday as Minnesota welcomes the Thunder Bay North Stars to Hoyt Lakes Arena in a 7 p.m. start.
