Minnesota handles Thunder Bay in preseason action

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers were all business as they blasted the Thunder Bay North Stars 7-1 Thursday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League exhibition contest at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Thunder Bay got on the board first near the five-minute mark of the opening session on a Kenny Turner effort, but it was all Minnesota after that.

Eric Madison tied it for the Iron Rangers before the stanza was complete as he beat Eric Mann 17:23.

The home side tacked on two more in the middle session to take a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes, eluding Nathaniel Dupuis, who came in to start the second, as Gus Karkinen connected at even strength and Jake Ellingson had one while his side was shorthanded.

Minnesota then blew the game open in the third striking four times in a seven-minute span to win going away.

Brock James, on the power play, Dalton Johnson, and a pair by Jack Dunnell, with his second coming while the Iron Rangers were down a man rounded out the scoring.

Johnson and Jackson Bond both chipped in with two assists for the winners in a contest.

Shots favoured Minnesota 34-28 with Bryce Kamenick picking up the victory in net.

Friday sees some Canadian Junior Hockey League action on the preseason slate as the Fort Frances Lakers host the Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League in a 7:30 p.m. start at Ice for Kids Arena.
