Sioux Lookout, ON — October 2, 2026 — The Sioux Lookout Bombers delivered a dominant performance in their home opener at the Hangar Friday night, cruising to a 5–1 victory over the Red Lake Miners.
The Bombers controlled the game from the opening faceoff, outshooting Red Lake 49–30 and generating consistent offensive pressure throughout the night. Goaltender Stanislav Stefaniv was equally impressive at the other end of the ice, stopping 29 of the 30 shots he faced.
Sioux Lookout wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. At 5:20 of the opening period, Scaddan opened the scoring with his first goal of the season, assisted by Carter and Housley. The Bombers continued to apply pressure and doubled their lead at 16:25 when Nicol scored his second of the season, with Labelle and Fortin picking up the assists.
The Bombers dominated the opening frame, outshooting the Miners 22–6 and taking a 2–0 advantage into the first intermission.
Sioux Lookout continued to dictate play in the second period. At 16:09, Thompson scored his first of the season to extend the Bombers’ lead to 3–0. Penston and Carter assisted on the goal.
Red Lake managed just 12 shots in the period, while Bombers goaltender Stefaniv continued to turn aside everything that came his way. Red Lake goaltender Donohue was kept busy, making 39 saves through the first two periods.
The Miners finally broke through early in the third period. At 3:39, Corwyn Bear scored on Red Lake’s power play, with Nault and Wandler assisting. The goal cut the Bombers’ lead to 3–1 and briefly gave the visitors some momentum.
The Bombers quickly took it back. At 13:54, Davis scored his first of the season, assisted by Benmore, to restore the three-goal advantage. Just 37 seconds later, Penston added another goal, with Norton and Thompson assisting, making it 5–1.
The back-to-back goals effectively put the game out of reach and capped a strong third period for Sioux Lookout.
Special teams played an important role throughout the contest. Red Lake went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Bombers went 0-for-3 with the man advantage. Despite allowing a power-play goal, Sioux Lookout’s penalty kill successfully shut down five of Red Lake’s six opportunities.
With five different Bombers finding the back of the net and Stefaniv providing steady goaltending, Sioux Lookout put together a complete performance from start to finish.
