Wesley-Chisel leads North Stars past GM Ice Dogs

DRYDEN, Ont. – Thunder Bay North Stars defenceman Aaron Wesley-Chisel had a pair of power play goals to help lead his club to a 4-2 victory over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs Friday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Memorial Arena.

The visiting North Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on a Kenny Turner even strength effort at 12:06 followed by Wesley-Chisel’s first man advantage marker with 21 seconds remaining in the period.

Special teams allowed Dryden to get on the board 11 minutes into the second as Derek McPhail connected on the power play.

Thunder Bay went back on top by two a couple shifts later as Hayden Hickey notched the eventual game-winner at 13:07.

The GM Ice Dogs added another during a man advantage opportunity in the latter stages of the frame as Cole Golka buried his league-leading 41st goal of the season.

Golka’s effort leaves him one shy of the Dryden team record for tallies in a single season, set by Jordan Chong back in 2005-06 when he scored 42 times.

In the third Wesley-Chisel slammed home some insurance for the North Stars midway through the period to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal in the contest were 41 apiece with Eric Mann picking up the win while Chase Gorman suffered the loss.

SIJHL action resumes Saturday on two fronts as league-leading Fort Frances Lakers host the Minnesota Iron Rangers in a 7:30 p.m. start at Ice for Kids Arena while Thunder Bay and Dryden meet again at 8 p.m. at Memorial Arena.
