Harney backstops Miners to win over Iron Rangers

EAR FALLS, Ont. – The English River Miners rode the 49-save performance of goaltender Greg Harney to backstop them to a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Friday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Ear Falls Arena.

The lone goal of the opening period was provided by the Miners’ Taylor Bargar at 13:52 of the stanza as he notched his 10th of the season.

Minnesota drew level 5:18 into the middle session courtesy of Thomas Fazio’s 19th of the campaign.

English River countered a minute and a half later as rookie forward Kirk Coppock put his side up for good.

The Miners added to their lead before the frame was complete as Layne Anderson connected on the power play at 16:57.

Special teams saw the home side add to their cushion with a man advantage effort supplied by Mark Dryer at 3:38.

Noah Anderson brought the Iron Rangers closer with six and a half minutes to go, but another English River first-year forward in Alex Maticic iced it in the late going with an empty netter as he capped on Friday the 13th with his 13th tally of the 2014-15 campaign.

Ryker Moreau had two assists to aid the Miners offensively.

Kyle Carignan faced 33 attempts in defeat for Minnesota.
