Unbeaten Fort Frances hands Minnesota 1st loss

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The defending Superior International Junior Hockey League champion Fort Frances Lakers used a well-balanced attack getting goals from five different skaters to defeat the Minnesota Iron Rangers 5-1 Saturday at Ice for Kids Arena.

After a scorless opening period, Fort Frances came out firing in the middle session striking three times on markers by Matthew Ray, Dylan Robertson and Isaiah Olschewske, who all picked up their first tallies of the campaign.

A Dylan Kooner power play effort put the home up 4-0 eight and a half minutes into the third while Cole Tymkin extended the Lakers lead two minutes.

Minnesota would dash Brandon Bodnar shutout bid with just 87 remaining as Dawson Mershon struck during a late man advantage opportunity.

Colton Spicer and Andrew Willner had two assists apiece for the Fort Frances in the triumph.

Bodnar did stopp 27 of the 28 shots he faced to pick up the win as the Lakers improved to 3-0 on the season.

Kyle Carignan faced 40 attempts in defeat for the Iron Rangers who fell to 4-1.
