Dushenko solid as Fort Frances drops Dryden

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Pierce Dushenko stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced to backstop the Fort Frances Lakers to a 3-1 triumph over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs Friday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

After neither side scored in the opening 20 minutes, it was Fort Frances who got things going offensively early in the second as Dustin Deugau connected on the power play at 1:48.

Dryden countered quickly with the equalizer just 62 seconds later as Ben Smaha finished off the work of Mark Ziobro and Braedyn Aubin.

The Lakers would even get the eventual game-winner late in the stanza when Kyle Folson’s effort eluded GM Ice Dogs netminder Taylor Unruh at 17:25.

Dylan Kooner added some insurance early in the third for the home side to round out the scoring.

Final shots on goal in the contest were 32-30 in favour of Fort Frances with Dushenko picking up the win and Unruh the loss.

The 2-0 Lakers return to the ice Saturday as they host the 4-0 Minnesota Iron Rangers at 7:30 p.m. at Ice for Kids Arena.

Meanwhile Dryden is also back in action Saturday as they welcome the English River Miners to Memorial Arena in another 7:30 p.m. start.
