Stars stun Rangers with 3rd period rally

THUNDER BAY, Ont. –  The Thunder Bay North Stars stormed back with a five-goal third period to defeat the Minnesota Iron Rangers 8-6 Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at the Fort William Gardens.

Minnesota came out quickly grabbing a 2-0 lead on markers by John Cuni and Nick Stockert.

After Cashen Tighe scored for Thunder Bay to cut into the deficit, the Iron Rangers proceeded to notch three more on tallies by Mitch Renstrom, Dan Sarnecki and Alex Arnold made it 5-1.

Jesse Talakoski would pick up one late in first to pull the Stars to within three.

The two teams settled down defensively in the middle session with only one goal being scored with that coming off the stick of Thunder Bay’s Tighe at 17:58.

Brad Thrower started the North Stars comeback in the final frame picking up markers a minute apart early in the third to knot it at 5-5.

Minnesota made went back ahead at 5:51 thanks to another by Sarnecki, but Thunder Bay answered that with a Kris Hamlin power play effort at 10:53.

Brendan Gillis then gave the North Stars their first lead of the night with 4:18 remaining and then ice their comeback with an empty netter courtesy of Talakoski to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal on the night were 39-29 in favour of Thunder Bay with Riley Corbin picking up the win and Bryce Kamenick the loss.
