Regular season comes to a close as Dryden defeats English River

EAR FALLS, Ont. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs defeated the English River Miners 5-2 Saturday in the Superior International Junior Hockey League’s regular season finale in a penalty-filled contest at Ear Falls Arena.

Dryden jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a pair of tallies by Nick Prouty and a solo effort  by Jonathon Philley with each skater netting a man advantage marker.

Alex Maticic got one back for the Miners, via the power play, late in the first.

Kent Walchuk added the lone goal of the middle session to put the Ice Dogs up 4-1 after 40 minutes.

After Hank Bouchard added another on the power play for the Miners eight minutes into the third, Cole Golka wrapped up the scoring with his team-record and league 2014-15 season high 47th of the campaign at 16:48 to round out the scoring.

Chase Gorman picked up the win while P.D. Melgoza suffered the loss.

SIJHL playoff action gets underway Tuesday as the Thunder Bay North Stars host English River in Game 1 of their best-of-five opening round series at the Fort William Gardens. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
