Power play leads Iron Rangers over North Stars

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers used the strength of five power play goals to defeat the visiting Thunder Bay North Stars 6-4 Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up Saturday evening at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Each side tallied twice in the opening 20 minutes with Nick Nigro and Daniel McKitrick scoring for Thunder Bay while Evan Erickson and Seth Chumley countered with power play markers for Minnesota.

The North Stars took the lead in the middle stanza when McKitrick buried his second of the night 2:44 into the frame.

Special teams allowed the Iron Rangers to notch the equalizer with 7:48 remaining in regulation as Hunter Routheau blasted home his club’s third extra man marker of the evening.

Kris Hamlin put the North Stars back in front, but a pair of power play efforts from Drew Millis in the late going gave Minnesota the victory.|

Max Seiter added an empty netter with 10 seconds left to round out the scoring.

The Iron Rangers outshot Thunder Bay 43-24 with Chase Gorman picking up the win and Nathaniel Dupuis suffering the setback.
