Opening round opponents confirmed in SIJHL playoffs

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – With the results of game action Wednesday in the Superior International Junior Hockey League, it has now been decided who the respective opponents will be in the first round of the upcoming playoffs.

The No. 4 seed Thunder Bay North Stars will meet the No. 5 English River Miners in a best-of-five opening round match-up getting underway next week.

Thunder Bay will have home ice for games one and two and, if necessary five, while English River will be the home side for game three and, if required, four.

A game schedule for the series will be announced once finalized.

The winner will meet the league-leading Fort Frances Lakers in one league best-of-seven semifinal.

It has also been determined that the Minnesota Iron Rangers and  Dryden GM Ice Dogs will square off in the other league semifinal, with home ice in that best-of-seven set still to be decided.

The Iron Rangers hold a slim one point lead on the Ice Dogs in the race for second overall in the SIJHL standings with both teams having one game remaining in regular season play.

Minnesota is at Thunder Bay Friday at 7:30 p.m. while Dryden heads to Ear Falls Saturday to meet English River at 7 p.m.
