North Stars rally to upend Miners in OT

EAR FALLS, Ont. – Brandon Wolframe’s goal 42 seconds into overtime helped the Thunder Bay North Stars complete a come from behind 6-5 triumph over the English River Miners Friday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Ear Falls Arena.

English River stormed out of the game scoring all five of their tallies in the opening period compared to two markers by Thunder Bay to go up 5-2 through 20 minutes of play and spelling an early end to North Stars’ netminder Eric Mann’s night.

Aaron Beauchamp gave the Miners the early lead before Thunder Bay’s Cashen Tighe tied it midway through the stanza.

The home side then struck twice a minute and a half apart to go up 3-1 on tallies by Dominic Blouin and Eric Champagne.

After the North Stars’ Matthias Gardiman brought his side to within one, English River tacked on two more off the sticks of Alex Maticic and Champagne to put the Miners seemingly in control.

Thunder Bay battled back to within one in the middle session getting goals Ryan McQueen and Ryan Walsh to make it a 5-4 game after two periods of play.

Wolframe then buried the equalizer at 11:45 of the third, forcing extra time as he connected on the power play.

Early in the OT Wolframe then won it as the North Stars finished off the comeback to pick up the extra point on the night.

Thunder Bay defenceman Walsh also added four assists along with his tally for a five-point night.

Nathaniel Dupuis made 19 saves in relief to register the victory in relief of Mann.

Greg Harney helped his side earn a point facing 39 shots overall.
