North Stars move into 1st place

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Thunder Bay North Stars rode the strength of three power play goals and the 34-save performance of Eric Mann to defeat the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 3-1 Friday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Dryden Memorial Arena.

With the victory the North Stars skated to their fourth victory in a row and eighth in their last nine starts to move into sole posession of first place in the SIJHL standings, one point clear of now second place Fort Frances.

In Friday’s affair the Ice Dogs took a one-goal lead after 20 minutes thanks to a Blake Berg man advantage effort late in the stanza.

Thunder Bay pulled level at 6:23 of the second courtesy of the second of the season by defenceman Joe Newhouse.

Nicholas Nigro then notched his third game-winning goal in his past four outings to put the visitors up for good.

Kris Hamlin then added some insurance for the North Stars, on the power play, midway through the final frame to round out the scoring.

Tate Sproxton faced 27 shots in a losing cause for the GM Ice Dogs who fell to 8-6-0-2 on the season.
