Norskies win wild one over Iron Rangers

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. – A Connor Bowey power play marker 56 seconds into overtime allowed the Thief River Norskies to survive a late three-goal comeback bid by the Minnesota Iron Rangers and prevail 8-7 in a high-scoring Superior International Junior Hockey League affair Wednesday evening at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Michael Johnson gave the Norskies the early lead, via the man advantage, before Minnesota responded with tallies from Jack Stensgard and Jonathan Yanovsky to go up 2-1 after one.

Cole Thompson then made it 3-1 for the Iron Rangers just over a minute into the second before Thief River Falls erupted for four goals in a nine-minute span later in the session to go in front 5-3 after two periods of play.

Mitchell Soderberg, with a pair, along with singles from Austin Storm and Keaton Huot were the Norskies marksmen on those efforts.

Soderberg then notched his third of the night at 6:47 to put the hosts up by three.

After Minnesota’s Dalton Johnson and Huot of Thief River Falls traded goals, the Iron Rangers stormed back with a trio of tallies with less than five minutes to play to force OT.

Logan Froberg and Yanovsky connected on the power play while Thompson tied with 28 seconds left in overtime.

Up a man entering OT a Bowey blast put an end to it with the game’s 15th and final tally.

Huot, Johnson and Cameron Jones had three assists each for the Norskies and did Froberg of Minnesota.

Shots on goal favoured the Iron Rangers by a 52-43 count.

Sam Novak picked up the win with Alex Burke suffering the loss in relief stopping four of the five attempts he faced.

Sean Angle allowed seven against on 38 shots in just over 50 minutes of work.
