Monday sees Lakers and Iron Rangers post victories

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – A pair of Superior International Junior Hockey League contests Monday say the Fort Frances Lakers dump the Wisconsin Wilderness 7-2 while the Minnesota Iron Rangers edged the English River Miners 5-4.

FORT FRANCES LAKERS 7 WISCONSIN WILDERNESS 2 – The visiting Lakers built-up a five-goal lead and never looked back en route to the victory over the Wilderness at the Spooner Ice House.

Bryce Lipinski and Brent Aiken had tallied in the opening period to put Fort Frances up a pair after 20 minutes.

The Lakers extended their cushion to 5-1 after the second stanza on efforts supplied by Lipinski, Lucas Debenedet and Mason Meyer before Nick Eytcheson got Wisconsin on the board with a shorthanded effort at 14:28.

Fort Frances then put the game away in the final frame sandwiching goals by Kevin Kurm and Bryson Jasper around another by Eytcheson to complete the scoring on the night.

Devin Tappenden made 27 saves to register the victory while Griffin Strain and Zann Anderson combined to face 60 shots in a losing cause.

MINNESOTA IRON RANGERS 4 ENGLISH RIVER MINERS 3 – It was a night of special teams at Ear Falls Arena as the two sides combined for four power play markers and two shorthanded before Minnesota eventually prevailed over English River.

Matt O’Dea opened the scoring with a late man-down effort to give the Iron Rangers the lead heading into the middle stanza.

Devan Vander Wyk tied it on the power play midway through the contest only to see Trevor Hoth put Minnesota back on top with an extra man effort before the session was complete.

Evan Erickson struck shorthanded 4:15 into the third to put the visitors up 3-1 only to see Richard Dartnall pot one on the power play with 9:15 to go.

Noah Anderson made it 4-2 just over two minutes later while Ryker Moreau added one late for the Miners before time expired and the Iron Rangers skated away with the two points.

Shots on goal favoured English River 31-21 with Alex Reichle picking up the win and P.D. Melgoza the loss.

SIJHL action resumes Wednesday as Thunder Bay travels to Dryden to meet the Ice Dogs in a 7:30 p.m. start at Memorial Arena.
