Lakers’ Wickstrom named Pizza Hut player of the week
THUNDER BAY, Ont. – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced today that Fort Frances Lakers defenceman Cody Wickstrom has been named Pizza Hut player of the week for the period wrapping up March 2.
In three games last week the 20-year-old Marquette, Mich., product amassed six points helping the Lakers skate to a trio of victories while wrapping up the SIJHL’s regular season title.
Wickstrom doled up six assists during the week including setting up a pair of tallies, including the game-winner, in a 3-2 triumph over Wisconsin last Tuesday.
Three nights later the Fort Frances blueline registered a career-high four helpers helping his side blast English River 8-0.
On the season he leads the Lakers in points among defencemen with 36 on seven goals and 29 assists in just 41 games.
Also earning consideration for Pizza Hut player of the week was Matthias Gardiman, (F) Thunder Bay North Stars; Evan Erickson, (F) Minnesota Iron Rangers; Tim Kavanaugh, (D) Dryden Ice Dogs; Eric Masters (F) English River Miners and Alex Rezansoff, (F) Wisconsin Wilderness.
At the conclusion of the regular season the SIJHL’s most valuable player will be presented the Pizza Hut player of the year award and will also go on to be the league’s representative for the national Canadian Junior Hockey League player of the year trophy.
