Minerva highlights strong 2nd period as Lakers drop Miners

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Nick Minerva tallied twice and added two assists as part of a five-goal second period for his team as the Fort Frances Lakers defeated the English River Miners 5-1 Friday in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

After a scoreless first frame, there was plenty of offense in the middle stanza starting with Minerva connecting on the power play 30 seconds into the session.

Cole Tymkin came right back for the Lakers to make it 2-0 just over a half minute later for his 15th goal of the season.

Alex Maticic reached the 20-tally plateau for the Miners at 5:06 as he connected during an English River man advantage opportunity.

Minerva answered that with an extra man marker of his own to make it 3-1 for the home side while Nolan Ross added one at even strength two minutes later.

The SIJHL’s leading point producer Dylan Robertson then rounded out the night’s scoring at 18:56 of the second as he notched his 30th of the season.

Shots on goal favoured Fort Frances 44-30 on the night with Brandon Bodnar securing the win while Reid Kilburn suffered the loss.

The same two teams will meet again Saturday back at Ice for Kids Arena at 7:30 p.m. before concluding their regular season Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., also in Fort Frances.
