The Red Lake Miners defeated the the Fort France Lakers 5-3 to win their 2024-2025 SIJHL season home opener at the Cochenour Arena.
Gunner Paridis was named starting goalie for the visiting Lakers while Trent Boryszczuk got the nod for the Miners.
First period action saw the Miners strike first at 13:19 courtesy of Brayden Rowsell’s first of the season when he buried the rebound past Paradis for a 1-0 lead. Brady Krentz would tie the game at 14:16 with a shot from the point that beat Boryszczuk for a power play marker his first of the season. With just 47 seconds left in the period Nathan Dann beat Paradis for his 4th of the season to give the Miners a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Bryson Carlyle opened up second period scoring at 4:56 beating Paradis from the point on the power play to make it 3-1. Jack Wood’s power play goal at 13:02 would pull the Lakers within 1. After 40 minutes of play the Miners lead the Lakers 3-2.
Quinn Szpak got the third period scoring going at 3:57 with his second of the season to give the Miners a 4-2 lead. Gavin Simon score his first SIJHL goal on the power play at 6:35 another power play tally to pull the Lakers within 1. Euan Morrison would score his first goal as a Miner at 13:10 to put the Miners back up by 2. The Miners would kill off a couple of power plays before the final buzzer sounded for a 5-3 Miners win.
These 2 teams will face each other on a quick turnaround before Saturday nights suck drop in Fort Frances.
