Meyer strikes late to lead Lakers over Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – A Mason Meyer goal with 58 seconds remaining lifted the visiting Fort Frances Lakers to a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Sunday afternoon in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Drew Millis staked the home side to an early lead as he notched the lone tally of the opneing period.

Miles Nolan tied it for the Lakers with the first of three power play markers by his club on the day at 2:26 of the middle stanza.

A man advantage marker by Minnesota’s Hunter Routheau put the Rangers back on top six minutes later only to see Jake Holland score the equalizer with his side up a man at 11:02.

Fort Frances took their first lead of the day with just a couple seconds left in the middle session as Carter Chorney connected on the power play before the frame had expired.

A.J. Rupert squared things up for Minnesota five and a half minutes into the third, but with overtime looming Meyer finished off a feed by Alex Rezansoff to give the Lakers the triumph.

Devin Tappenden made 39 saves in net for Fort Frances to register the win.

Chase Gorman faced 30 shots in defeat for the Iron Rangers.

SIJHL action resumes Wednesday as the 2-0 Lakers travel to Dryden to take on the also 2-0 GM Ice Dogs in a 7:30 p.m. start at Memorial Arena.
