Lakers win streak reaches Lucky 13

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – Mason Meyer tallied twice and added an assist to help propel the Fort Frances Lakers to a 5-3 victory over the English River Miners Wednesday afternoon in Day 2 play of the Superior International Junior Hockey League Showcase at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

With the decision the SIJHL-leading Lakers extended their season-high winning streak to 13 straight games.

Fort Frances got on the board first in this one as Lucas DeBenedet notched his 14th of the campaign at 4:33.

English River countered with the equalizer 70 seconds later as rookie Kirk Coppock, the youngest player in the league, fired one past Lakers’ starter Pierce Dushenko.

The Lakers went back on top midway through the opening stanza courtesy of a Dylan Robertson effort.

Meyer then made it 3-1 at 12:46 as he put his side up by a pair.

Coppock then helped another first-year forward in the Miners Alex Maticic, the second youngest skater in the SIJHL, find the back of the net with 31 seconds left in the period with Ian Bablitz also picking up a helper.

Fort Frances added to their lead supplying the only two goals of the middle session as Miles Nolan and Meyer scored to make it 5-2 through 40 minutes.

Coppock’s second goal and third point of the afternoon pulled the Miners closer with 8:16 remaining in regulation, but it turned out to be the final marker of the contest.

Bryson Jasper chipped in with a pair of assists to aid Lakers offensive cause.

Shots on goal in the match-up favoured Fort Frances 38-25 with Dushenko picking up the win and P.D. Melgoza the loss.

The SIJHL Showcase resumes later this evening as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs take on the Thunder Bay North Stars in a 7 p.m. start back in Hoyt Lakes.
