North Stars top Ice Dogs at SIJHL Showcase

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Thunder Bay North Stars got a pair of third period goals from Tim Cavar to help them pull out a 4-1 victory over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs Wednesday evening in Day 2 play of the Superior International Junior Hockey League Showcase at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Thunder Bay grabbed a 2-0 lead after two periods of play on markers from Nicholas Nigro and Matthias Gardiman.

Dryden got on the board 11:39 into the third as Jonathon Philley struck shorthanded to make it a 2-1 game.

A Cavar power play blast put the North Stars back up by a pair less than a minute later and he then iced it with an empty netter with four seconds remaining to round out the scoring.

Eric Mann made 27 stops to pick up the win for Thunder Bay with Chase Gorman making 36 saves in defeat for the GM Ice Dogs.

The SIJHL Showcase concludes Thursday with two more tilts as the Fort Frances Lakers put a 13-game winning streak on the line vs. the North Stars at 3:30 p.m. while Dryden tangles with the host Minnesota Iron Rangers at 7 p.m. back in Hoyt Lakes.
