Iron Rangers shine in Showcase opener

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – Goals in the final minute in each of the first two periods helped lift the Minnesota Iron Rangers to a 5-2 victory over the English River Miners Tuesday evening in the opener of the Superior International Junior Hockey League Showcase at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Jarrett Day staked English River to an early lead as he beat Minnesota starter Devin Tappenden at 2:25.

Special teams allowed the Iron Rangers to pull even late in the stanza as Thomas Fazio connected on the power play with 25 seconds to go in the frame.

Layne Anderson put the Miners back on top 3:30 into the middle session only to see Minnesota tie it three minutes later courtesy of Eric Madison.

As the middle period was winding down the home side struck twice in a 19-second span to go up a pair as Gus Karkinen and Jason Reynolds both eluded Greg Harney in the English River net to make it a 4-2 game after 40 minutes.

Jake Ellingson added a man advantage effort for the Iron Rangers early in the third to round out the scoring.

Will Fobair, Seth Chumley and Noah Anderson each doled out two assists each to help Minnesota offensively.

Final shots on goal were 47-24 in favour of the Iron Rangers with Tappenden picking up the win and Harney the loss.

Two more SIJHL Showcase contests are on the slate Wednesday in Hoyt Lates with the Miners taking on the Fort Frances Lakers at 3:30 p.m. while the Dryden GM Ice Dogs tangle with the Thunder Bay North Stars in the night cap, which gets underway at 7 p.m.
