Iron Rangers upend Ice Dogs

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers got two tallies apiece from A.J. Rupert and Trevor Hoth to help lead them to a 7-4 victory over the Dryden Ice Dogs Sunday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Memorial Arena in Dryden.

After a scoreless opening period the visiting Iron Rangers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes on two markers by Rupert and singles courtesy of Noah Anderson and Jonathon Losurdo.

A high-scoring final frame saw the two sides combine for seven goals before Minnesota eventually prevailed.

Dryden came out quickly in the third getting efforts from Tim Kavanaugh and Chris Sitco early in the session.

Hoth countered however just 12 seconds after Sitco’s tally to put the Iron Rangers up 5-2.

The Ice Dogs continued to battle back thanks to goals by Chris Varrin and Synee Coonishish, who connected on the power play, to make it interesting at 5-4 with 6:45 to go.

Minnesota held on however in the latter stages of the contest to seal the victory with insurance supplied by Hoth and Evan Erickson.

The Iron Rangers held a wide edge in the shots on goal department by a 38-19 count with Erick Majerle picking up the win and Joakim Jutras suffering the loss.

SIJHL action resumes Monday on two fronts as Minnesota heads to Ear Falls to meet the English River Miners while the Wisconsin Wilderness host the Fort Frances Lakers.
