Lakers thwart GM Ice Dogs comeback with OT triumph

FORT FRANCES, Ont. –  The Fort Frances Lakers got four goals from Christian Ripley in regulation and the game-winner 2:57 into overtime courtesy of Julian Uhryniuk as they withstood a comeback bid by the Dryden GM Ice Dogs to earn a 5-4 triumph Saturday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ice for Kids Arena.

Dryden did get off to a good start striking 26 seconds after the opening face-off on Blake Berg’s 10th of the season.

Ripley began his big night five minutes later with a man advantage effort to knot the score at 1-1.

He then tacked on two more in the middle session to put Fort Frances up 3-1 midway through the second stanza.

Braedyn Allkins brought the visitors to within at at 11:58 only too see Ripley notch his fourth of the night just 43 seconds later.

Dryden mounted their comeback and forced extra time in the third thanks to Tanner Watt’s 10th at 11:39 and the equalizer with 1:02 remaining in regulation off the stick on Kent Walchuk.

In OT however Uhryniuk it won it for Fort Frances to give them the extra point on the night.

Dylan Robertson had three assists for the Lakers in the victory.

Pierce Dushenko made 37 stops to record the win for Fort Frances.

Taylor Unruh saw 40 shots fired his way in the OT setback for the GM Ice Dogs.
