Lakers snap winless drought in big way

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Coming in on a season-high three-game winless drought, the Fort Frances Lakers ended that in a big way Friday as they blasted the Minnesota Iron Rangers 8-0 in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

The Lakers were all business from the onset chasing Minnesota starter Anthony Pupplo before the first period was done as they scored five times in the opening session.

Andrew Willner got things going for Fort Frances 7:10 in as he picked one up on the power play.

A.J. Rupert added to the Lakers lead midway through the session before Willner added another supplying a shorthanded marker at 13:12.

Nick Minerva made it 4-0  two and a half minutes later with another man advantage effort before Matt Tustin chased Pupplo as he notched his first SIJHL goal at 17:10

Rupert added another for the lone tally of the middle session, which came at 5:28.

Fort Frances then put the game away in the third tacking on late efforts from Ryley Bosman and Willner, who finished off a hat trick with 74 seconds to go.

Nolan Ross had two assists for the Lakers.

Brandon Bodnar stopped all 29 shots he faced to post his initial SIJHL shutout.

Pupplo allowed five against on 12 attempts while Kyle Carignan handled 31 of the 34 in nearly 43 minutes of relief for the Iron Rangers.
