Lakers rally to edge North Stars

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Colton Spicer’s third goal of the game, coming with just 42 seconds remaining helped the Fort Frances Lakers complete a rally in defeating the visiting Thunder Bay North Stars 6-5 Saturday in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Ice for Kids Arena.

Avery Siau opened the scoring for Thunder Bay five minutes into contest as he notched his first SIJHL goal.

Fort Frances responded with an equalizer before the opening session was complete courtesy of Miles Nolan.

The second session saw the North Stars take a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes on efforts by Nicholas Nigro, Brett Wolframe, on a penalty shot, and Joe Newhouse while Mason Meyer and Spicer countered for the Lakers.

A Matt Vela power play marker 39 seconds into the final frame tied things up at 4-4 while Spicer put his side up by one moments later.

After a Bradley Belisle man advantage effort with 1:13 to go appeared to set-up overtime for the Stars, it was Spicer who won it for Fort Frances as he finished off his hat trick in the late stages to give his club the two points.

Ryan Ferguson stopped 14 of 15 shots he faced in 22 and a half minutes of relief of starter Devin Tappenden to pick up the win for the Lakers.

Nathaniel Dupuis made 30 stops in defeat for Thunder Bay.
