GM Ice Dogs skate to Saturday win

DRYDEN, Ont. – A Cole Golka goal in the shootout was the difference as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs rallied to squeak past the Minnesota Iron Rangers in Superior International Junior Hockey League play Saturday at Memorial Arena.

Minnesota helped themselves to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes on markers by Gus Karkinen and a man advantage effort by Max Seiter.

The two sides then traded power play tallies in the second with Golka connecting for Dryden and Jason Reynolds for the Iron Rangers.

The home side added later goals by Matt Houston and Jonathon Philley to tie things up heading into the third session.

Minnesota went back on top in the period thanks to special teams as A.J. Rupert and Eric Madison struck with their side up a man.

Undettered, the Ice Dogs clawed their way back to force extra time getting goals by Philley and Joel Zieroth in the final four minutes. Zieroth also had three assists on the evening.

After a five-minute overtime solved nothing, Dryden won it in extra shots thanks to Golka’s decider and an earlier tally by Blake Berg.

Eric Madison had the lone Minnesota marker in the shootout.

Shots on net were 41-36 in the Ice Dogs’ favour with Josh Martin earning the victory and Chase Gorman helping his squad pick up a point.
