Lakers outlast Miners 6-5

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Jake Holland’s second goal of the game with 9:16 remaining proved to be the decider as the Fort Frances Lakers held on to slip past the English River Miners 6-5 Saturday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Hayden Hickey staked the Miners to an early lead only to see Fort Frances counter with efforts by Mason Meyer and Holland to go up 2-1 after 20 minutes.

The two clubs then combined for five tallies in the middle session, including three by English River to tie it at 4-4 after two.

Mark Sprong and a pair by Eric Champagne accounted for the Miners’ markers while Meyer and Bowen Alcock countered for the Lakers.

Bryson Jasper put the home side back in front early in the final frame before Holland supplied the eventual game-winner.

Champage added another late for the Miners to complete a hat trick with the final goal of the evening.

Tristan Salesse chipped in with a pair oif assists for the Lakers.

Shots on goal favoured English River 38-28 with Ryan Ferguson picking up the win and P.D. Melgoza suffering the loss.

SIJHL play resumes Wednesday as Fort Frances heads to Thunder Bay to meet the North Stars in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Fort William Gardens.
