Lakers edge Iron Rangers 5-4 in back and forth affair

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Fort Frances Lakers picked up two assists apiece from Julian Uhryniuk and Ryan Gazich to help them edge the Minnesota Iron Rangers 5-4 Wednesday in a back and forth Superior International Junior Hockey League affair at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Fort Frances began the scoring just past the three-minute mark of the contest on Ian Jarvis’ sixth goal of the season.

Minnesota came back to tie it at 6:26 on a Brendan Bomay shorthanded effort while teammate Clayton Brown connected at even strength a couple shifts later to put the Iron Rangers up 2-1.

A Lakers power play allowed them to knot the score at 2-2 before the first period was complete when Brett Pickler notched the equalizer at 15:29.

Minnesota regained the lead 7:27 into the middle stanza thanks to a man advantage marker of their own off the stick Jonathan Yanovsky, however Tanner Garnham’s first SIJHL tally for Fort Frances levelled the proceedings once again, late in the session.

Up a man to begin the third the Lakers went up by one 61 seconds in thanks to Tyler Malpass, who notched his 14th of the year.

Fort Frances then got the eventual game-winner with less than five minutes left in regulation from Cody Merritt.

Minnesota managed to get one back before time expired on Brown’s second of the night to round out the scoring.

Brown also had an assist, registering a three-point evening for the home side.

Brandon Bodnar made 28 saves to record the win for the Lakers while Sean Angle faced 28 attempts in defeat for the Iron Rangers.

The same two teams will meet again Friday back in Hoyt Lakes at 7 p.m.
