Lakers double Miners 8-4

EAR FALLS, Ont. – A four-goal third period helped the Fort Frances Lakers pull away and defeat the English River Miners 8-4 Friday night in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ear Falls Arena.

English River jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one period of play getting early tallies from Ryker Moreau and Kirk Coppock, with his first SIJHL goal, before the Lakers’ Mason Meyer struck on the power play at 15:58.

After the Miners went up 3-1 in the second courtesy of an Eric Champagne extra man effort, Fort Frances stormed back with markers from Jake Holland, Gordon Campbell and Sam Schultz to take the lead into the final frame.

English River tied it with Coppock’s second of the night at 4:28 of the third, but the Lakers blew it open on tallies by Colton Spicer, Holland, Bryson Jasper and Aaron Wesley-Chisel to round out the scoring.

Shots on goal favoured Fort Frances 43-28 with Ryan Gerson picking up the win and Greg Harney the loss.
