Lakers clinch SIJHL regular season crown

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – With their 8-3 victory over the English River Miners Friday evening the Fort Frances Lakers clinched their second consecutive Superior International Junior Hockey League regular season title.

Fort Frances now boasts a 36-9-0-1 overall record with the club still having 10 games remaining in the 2014-15 regular season campaign, but no other teams in the league can match or surpass the club’s 73 points they have accumulated to date.

Their on-ice efforts also guarantees the Lakers will be the No. 1 seed and have home ice advantage in the upcoming SIJHL playoffs.

Fort Frances will also serve as the host team for the 2015 Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canada Jr. A Championship April 28 through May 2 at Ice for Kids Arena.

This also marks the fourth time in the 14-year history of the SIJHL that a Fort Frances-based squad has captured the league’s regular season crown.

The Lakers were also first overall in 2013-14 while the Borderland Thunder finished in top spot in league play in the initial two years of the league back in 2001-02 and 2002-03.
