Lakers clinch regular season title with win over Miners

EAR FALLS, Ont. – Fort Frances Lakers affiliate player David Pryde scored three times to help propel his side to  an 8-3 victory over the English River Miners Friday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Ear Falls Arena.

With the win the Lakers clinched their second consecutive regular season crown and earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SIJHL playoffs.

There was plenty of goals in the opening 20 minutes as the teams combined for five markers, including three by Fort Frances.

Miles Nolan, Pryde and Dylan Robertson had the tallies for the Lakers while Richard Dartnall notched both efforts for English River.

A penalty-filled middle stanza saw each club score once with Marco Romano adding one at event strength for the visitors and Landen Matechuk converting on the power play for the home team.

It was all Fort Frances in the final frame however as they struck four times in the late going to put the game away.

After A.J. Kapchuk had one during a man advantage at 13:12, Nolan added his second of the night a minute and a half later.

Pryde then capped off his SIJHL debut by tacking on two more 15 seconds apart to complete his hat trick.

Shots on goal favoured Fort Frances 55-33 with Pierce Dushenko picking up the win.

Greg Harney started for the Miners and allowed three against on 11 shots in 15 minutes of work while P.D. Melgoza suffered the loss in relief facing 44 attempts while giving up five goals.
