Lakers blast North Stars 8-1

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – Lucas DeBenedet scored twice and set-up another to help the Fort Frances Lakers blast the Thunder Bay North Stars 8-1 Saturday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League encounter at Ice for Kids Arena.

It took Fort Frances just 21 seconds to get going in this one as Nick Minerva beat Thunder Bay starter Nathaniel Dupuis.

Tallies a half minute apart from Colton Spicer on the power play and DeBenedet at even strength made it a 3-0 game before North Stars rookie forward Bradley Belisle notched his 19th goal of the season at 19:21.

The late marker in the first did not slow down the Lakers as they erupted for five tallies in the second to take control of the contest.

Dylan Robertson made it 4-1 and spelled the end of Dupuis’ night in favour of Eric Mann, but Fort Frances greeted him with four more efforts to complete the romp.

Bryson Jasper, Marco Romano, Cody Antonini and DeBenedet were the other Lakers’ marksmen.

A.J. Kapcheck chipped in with three assists for Fort Frances with Jasper adding two helpers of his own for a three-point night.

Park made 33 saves to pick up the win while Dupuis and Mann faced 41 shots in defeat.

SIJHL play resumes Wednesday as the Lakers travel to Dryden to take on the GM Ice Dogs in a 7:30 p.m. start at Memorial Arena.
