North Stars edge Miners in shootout

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Matthias Gardiman notched a hat-trick and then scored the deciding in the shootout as the Thunder Bay North Stars edged the English River Miners 5-4 Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Port Arthur Arena.

Thunder Bay took a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes on a pair of tallies by Gardiman while Kellen MacBlain had one for English River.

Each side struck twice in the middle session with the Miners getting early efforts from Eric Masters and John Morales to put them up 3-2 before the North Stars responded with markers from Robert MacLean and Gardiman’s third of the night with just three seconds left in the stanza as he scored on the power play.

Brenden Wilde then forced extra time as he buried the equalizer with 2:18 to go in the third.

After a scoreless five-minute OT, extra shots were required to determine a winner.

After Zach Grezelewski and Morales exchanged efforts, Gardiman won it on the final attempt of the night to give Thunder Bay the second point on the night.

Shots on goal favoured Thunder Bay 37-30 with Nathanial Dupuis picking up the win and Greg Harney suffering the shootout loss.
