GM Ice Dogs edge Lakers after lengthy shootout

MARATHON, Ont. – Troy Williams had the lone goal in a shootout that went seven rounds and 14 shooters as the Dryden GM Ice Dogs slipped past the Fort Frances Lakers 3-2 Thursday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League neutral site preseason contest held at Marathon Arena.

Alex Rezansoff continued his torrid offensive pace for the Lake in exhibition action as he put Fort Frances up 1-0 after one period of play.

After a scoreless middle session Dryden tied it in the third off the stick of Blake Berg.

Mark Bouchard of the GM Ice Dogs and Bowen Alcock of the Lakers then traded markers later in the frame to force OT.

After a five-minute extra session solved nothing a lengthy shootout ensued before Dryden eventually prevailed thanks to Williams’ lone effort.

Josh Martin and Tate Sproston were the Dryden goaltenders while Devon Tappenden and Ryan Ferguson were the Fort Frances netminders.

The shots on goal were unavailable.

The SIJHL preseason then concludes Sunday as Fort Frances travels to Ear Falls to tangle with the English River Miners at 3 p.m.
