Lakers edge Miners in preseason play

EAR FALLS, Ont. – A Bryson Jasper power play goal 8:26 into the third period proved to be the difference as the Fort Frances Lakers edged the English River Miners 5-4 Sunday in Superior International Junior Hockey League exhibition action at Ear Falls Arena.

Each side struck twice in the opening 20 minutes with Colton Spicer and Bowen Alcock connecting for Fort Frances while Ben Smaha and Liam Watson countered for English River via the man advantage.

The Lakers took a 3-2 lead after the second session courtesy of Max Kaerchter early in the frame.

After Ian Bablitz tied it for the Miners 36 seconds into the third, Fort Frances responded with markers by Jarred Taylro and Jasper to put the Lakers up by a pair.

Jared Bingus brought English River closer midway through the stanza, but it would turn out to be the final goal of the contest as time ran out.

Shots on goal favoured the visitors 34-26 with Devin Tappenden picking up the win and Greg Harney the loss.

Next up will be the start of the SIJHL regular season, which gets underway Friday as English River hosts the Dryden GM Ice Dogs at 7 p.m. while Fort Frances entertains the Thunder Bay North Stars at Ice for Kids Arena at 7:30 p.m.
