GM Ice Dogs complete weekend sweep of Thunder Bay

DRYDEN, Ont. – The Dryden GM Ice Dogs got two tallies apiece from Troy Williams and Kent Walchuk to help them upend the Thunder Bay North Stars 4-1 Saturday in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up at Memorial Arena.

Walchuk’s first of the night 13 and a half minutes into the opening period got Dryden going with the lone marker of the first.

Thunder Bay pulled even late in the second when Jared Fanti notched his first SIJHL goal with nine seconds remaining in the stanza.

Special teams allowed the GM Ice Dogs to retake the lead for good in the final frame as a Williams’ blast on the power play made it 2-1 four minutes into the third.

Williams then added another one at 16:25 for some insurance while Walcuck iced it with an empty netter in the late going to wrap things up offensively.

Paul Laferriere made 21 saves to record his initial SIJHL victory in net for Dryden, who improved to 2-0 early in the season following a 5-2 triumph over Thunder Bay Friday.

Riley Corbin was solid in defeat for the North Stars stopping 41 of 44 in defeat.
