Fort Frances earns 3rd straight regular season title

DRYDEN, Ont. – A Nolan Ross power play goal 15:38 into the second period proved to be the game-winner as the Fort Frances Lakers defeated the Dryden GM Ice Dogs 3-2 Saturday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Memorial Arena.

With the result the Lakers clinched their third consecutive SIJHL regular season title and will have the No. 1 seed and home ice advantage heading into the upcoming Bill Salonen Cup playoffs.

Fort Frances opened the scoring seven and a half minutes into the contest on Christian Ripley’s 17th of the campaign.

Special teams allowed the visitors to extend their lead at 11:50 as Roshen Jaswal notched his 10th during a Lakers man advantage opportunity.

Dryden got one back midway through the contest on Josh Oberg’s fourth of the season only too see Ross notch the eventual difference maker later in the period.

The GM Ice Dogs drew closer with 11:35 remaining in regulation thanks to the power play as Matt Houston’s 20th tally of the season brought the home side to within one.

Fort Frances netminder Pierce Dushenko shut the door from there however finishing with 31 saves to post the win.

Taylor Unruh allowed three against on 16 attempts in defeat for Dryden.

Nick Minerva dished out two assists for the Lakers in the victory.

The GM Ice Dogs return to action Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they host the Thunder Bay North Stars at Memorial Arena.
