English River takes marathon shootout over Dryden

COCHENOUR, Ont. – It took a combind 20 shooters, but in the end the English River Miners survived to earn a 3-2 shootout victory over the Dryden GM Ice Dogs Tuesday night in an entertaining Superior International Junior Hockey League contest held at Cochenour Arena.

Reid Kilburn stopped nine of 10 attempts in the shootout to earn the win for the Miners while Troy Pierce stopped eight of the 10 shots he faced.

English River took a 1-0 lead after one period of play as Sam Cirone notched his second of the season at 13:47.

It stayed that way until the early moments of the third when Dryden tied it just 10 seconds in on Matt Houston’s 22nd of the campaign.

Ryker Moreau’s 15th put the Miners back in front seven minutes later only to see the GM Ice Dogs force extra time on Troy Williams’ equalizer with 33 seconds remaining in regulation.

After a scorless five-minute OT, the marathon shootout went a long way before English River eventually won it.

Each goaltender stopped the first eight attempts they faced each before the Miners Gushue solved Pierce on the Miners’ ninth shot.

Joe Carney countered for Dryden and also scored on his shot to keep things going.

Braeden Pierce then notched the eventual difference maker for English River before Kilburn stymied Mark Ziobro to end it.

Kilburn also made 48 saves in the 65 minutes of action along with the nine of 10 in the shootout to pick-up the victory.

As for Pierce, he stopped 32 of 34 through three periods and OT and the eight of 10 in extra shots to help earn a point for the GM Ice Dogs.
