4-point night for Siau as Thunder Bay holds on to win at Minnesota

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Thunder Bay North Stars built up a four-goal lead and then had to withstand a third period comeback by the Minnesota Iron Rangers before eventually pulling out a 5-3 victory Tuesday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Thunder Bay came out quickly grabbing a 3-0 lead after the opening session on markers by Jake Robinson, Avery Siau and Christian Ward.

Things tightened up in the middle stanza as the period went scoreless.

The North Stars scored again 16 seconds into the final frame to go up by four on a Landon Letwin effort.

Minnesota started their comeback at 1:44 of the third on a Jake Ellingson goal.

Eric Madison added another for the home side 13 minutes later to make it 4-2.

The Iron Rangers got even closer with 1:53 remaining in regulation thanks to Ellingson’s second of the night and 15th of the season.

Minnesota then pulled starter Kyle Carignan in an effort to notch the equalizer, but Thunder Bay’s Siau secured the road win with an empty netter to round out the scoring with his second tally and fourth point of the night.

Eric Mann made 34 saves to record the win for the North Stars while Carignan faced 26 shots in defeat for the Iron Rangers.
