4-goal 3rd lifts Lakers past North Stars

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – A Colton Spicer power play goal 6:45 into the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Fort Frances Lakers scored four times in the third period to defeat the Thunder Bay North Stars 4-2 Saturday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest at Ice for Kids Arena.

It was a goaltender’s battle for most of the first two period’s with the game’s opening tally not coming until there were just 10 seconds left in the midle stanza when Thunder Bay’s Nicholas Nigro beat Fort Frances starter Nathan Park for his 29th effort of the season.

The Lakers tied it 4:17 into the third as defenceman Robbie Bonthron notched the equalizer.

Fort Frances then took the lead 40 seconds later when Miles Nolan fired home his 21st of the campaign.

Spicer then picked up the eventual decider during a man advantage opportunity a couple minutes later.

Thunder Bay got one back thanks to a Tim Cavar point blast with 6:47 to go, but Bowen Alcock countered that on the next shift to round out the night’s scoring.

Park finished with 31 stops to register the win for the Lakers with Eric Mann making 23 saves in defeat for the North Stars.
