3-point night for Minerva as Lakers top Miners

EAR FALLS, Ont. – Fort Frances Lakers defenceman Nick Minerva had a goal and two assists to help lead his side to a 4-1 triumph over the English River Minders in Superior International Junior Hockey League action Sunday evening at Ear Falls Arena.

The game was scoreless until the final minute of the first period when the league-leading Lakers struck twice in rapid succession to go up by two.

Julian Uhryniuk notched his seventh of the season for Fort Frances at 19:32 before Jason Wilson picked up his first SIJHL goal with a second left in the stanza.

In the middle frame it was the Miners’ turn to get a goal late as Brandon Schaber collected his eighth of the campaign with only 20 seconds left in the session.

In the third, Dylan Kooner extended the Fort Frances lead with four minutes to go and he notched his 14th for the club so far in 2015-16.

Minerva then iced it with an empty netter with 28 seconds left on a night where he extended a point streak to five and also got himself on the score sheet in 11 of his past dozen outings.

Brandon Bodnar was busy making 38 saves to record the decision in net for the Lakers while Reid Kilburn saw 29 shots fired his way in defeat for the Miners.

With the victory, Fort Frances wins for a fifth straight game while raising their overall record to 22-3-0-1.

English River dropped to 7-15-1-4 with the loss.
