Lakers win 4th straight

FORT FRANCES, Ont. – The Fort Frances Lakers received a 43-save performance from Pierce Dushenko along with three assists from Dylan Kooner and a pair of late empty net goals to pull out a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Iron Rangers in Superior International Junior Hockey League play at Ice for Kids Arena.

Each side would score once in the opening frame with Cole Tymkin connecting on the power play for Fort Frances at 9:20 while Minnesota’s Eric Madison countered at even strength with the equalizer just over two minutes later.

The Iron Rangers took the lead early in the middle stanza on Jake Ellingson’s fourth of the season at 2:39, but the Lakers tied it at 15:02 on a Nick Minerva man advantage effort.

Christian Ripley then notched the eventual game-winner for Fort Frances midway through the third.

He then added another into an empty net in the final minute while teammate Robbie Bonthron added one more into a vacant Iron Rangers goal with 10 seconds to go to round out the night’s scoring.

Brandon Zajicek added two assists to aid the Lakers’ cause.

The 43 stops by Dushenko raised his record to 19-3-0-0 on the season while his club improved to 21-3-0-1 overall.

Kyle Carignan made 25 saves in defeat for Minnesota as they fell to 9-15-2-0 on the year.
