North Stars rally to edge Iron Rangers

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Thunder Bay North Stars rallied with three third period goals to pull out a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Sunday evening in a Superior International Junior Hockey League contest held at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Minnesota opened the scoring 4:12 into the contest on Dan Sarnecki’s fourth of the season.

It stayed that way until the 7:14 mark of the middle session when Thunder Bay notched the equalizer on a Jesse Talakoski effort.

North Stars blueliner Joe Newhouse gave the visitors their first lead of the night nine minutes later as he collected his ninth marker of 2015-16.

A late man advantage opportunity allowed the Iron Rangers to pull even as Logan Froberg beat Thunder Bay starter Riley Corbin with 24 seconds left in the period.

Minnesota then went up 3-2 as Tristyn Sabina supplied his 10th at 2:17 only to see the North Stars come right back with the equalizer just 21 seconds later on affiliate Kirk Coppock’s first of the campaign.

Newhouse then struck again with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation as his second of the night proved to be the game-winner.

Brad Arabia then iced it late for Thunder Bay with an empty netter in the final seconds to round out the scoring.

Defencemen Charlie Corness of the North Stars and Dalton Johnson of the Iron Rangers had two assists each in the match-up.

Corbin was called up to make 44 saves in registering the win for Thunder Bay.

Anthony Pupplo saw 14 shots fired his way in defeat for Minnesota.
