Lakers hold off Iron Rangers in 5-3 win

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Fort Frances Lakers got goal from five different skaters and three assists courtesy of Nick Minerva to help lift them to a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Iron Rangers Thursday evening in Superior International Junior Hockey League action at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Fort Frances used the power play to take a two-tally lead after one period of play as Christian Ripley and Roshen Jaswal notched man advantage markers with the contest being just over 10 minutes old.

Minnesota got one back before the opening frame was complete thanks to Eric Madison’s fifth of the season at 14:36.

The Iron Rangers would tie it at 2-2 with 4:20 left in the second stanza as Tyler Lindstrom knocked in his first SIJHL goal.

The Lakers third power play marker of the night put the visitors back in front with Andrew Willner tapping in his eighth with assists going to Jaswal and Minerva at 17:36.

Robbie Bonthron extended the Fort Frances cushion midway through the third as his insurance effort proved to be the game-winning goal on the night.

Minnesota moved back to within one with 62 seconds remaining as Nolan Magsamen struck shorthanded to make it 4-3, but A.J. Rupert countered for Fort Frances by providing some insurance with his first in a Lakers uniform at 19:25 just as an Iron Rangers penalty had expired to round out the scoring.

Pierce Dushenko made 24 saves to post the win for Fort Frances with Kyle Carignan finishing with 28 stops in defeat for Minnesota.

With the result the league-leading Lakers improved to 18-3-0-1 while the Iron Rangers saw a modest two-game win streak come to an end as they fell to 6-13-2-0 overall.
