Minnesota rallies to upend Thunder Bay

HOYT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Iron Rangers rallied from a two-goal deficit after one period of play to defeat the visiting Thunder Bay North Stars 5-3 Tuesday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League match-up held at Hoyt Lakes Arena.

Thunder Bay got off to a good road start grabbing a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes starting with Jake Robinson’s fourth of the season at 11:50.

The North Stars then added to their cushion with 2:14 to go in the opening session as defenceman Joe Newhouse struck on the power play to put them up a pair.

Minnesota came out quickly in the second stanza getting one back at the 50-second mark as Alex Arnold notched his sixth of the campaign.

A pair of newcomers playing their first SIJHL game helped the Iron Rangers to draw level six minutes later as Tyler Lindstrom fed Alex Ramirez for the equalizer.

The first minute of the third was also rewarding for Minnesota as Dalton Johnson gave the home side their initial lead of the evening.

Robinson’s second of the game tied it at 3-3 at 4:34 of the final frame as the two sides went back and forth.

However, just 47 seconds later the Iron Rangers got the eventual game-winner off the stick of Eric Madison as he gave his club the lead for good.

Madison then capped off his night with an empty-netter at 19:24 to secure the victory.

Tristyn Sabina had two assists to aid the winner’s cause.

Kyle Carignan made 28 saves to earn the triumph in net for Minnesota.

Eric Mann faced 38 shots in defeat for Thunder Bay.
