Thunder Bay tops English River for a 2nd straight night

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Nicholas Nigro had a goal in each period and added an assist to help propel the Thunder Bay North Stars to a 5-2 victory over the English River Miners Monday night in a Superior International Junior Hockey League encounter held at the Fort William Gardens.

Special teams saw Thunder Bay take the lead six and a half minutes into the contest as Brad Arabia struck shorthanded to put the home side in front.

English River battled back to tie it midway through the opening frame on Ryker Moreau’s 10th of the season.

Nigro came back to put the North Stars in front with a power play marker at 13:35 of the first while teammate Bryce Martyn supplied another man advantage effort at 15:52 to make it 3-1 through one.

Hank Bouchard pulled the Miners to within one early in the middle stanza, but Nigro collected his second of the evening at 17:07 to put Thunder Bay up by a pair again through 40 minutes.

Nigro then finished off his hat trick with 4:11 remaining to round out the scoring.

Kenny Turner helped set-up each of Nigro’s efforts for a three-point night while Arabia added a couple helpers to go along with his tally.

Joe Newhouse also picked up an assist for Thunder Bay to extend a current SIJHL-high point streak to 10 consecutive games.

Riley Corbin made 25 stops to secure the win for the North Stars with Reid Kilburn facing 46 attempts in defeat for English River.
